I want to teach 11th grade language arts when I graduate, and one of the standards for this grade is LAFS.1112.RI.3.7. This standard says that students need to be able to evaluate information visually and in words to solve problems. Basically, students should be able to read an article and look at something, maybe a graph, and evaluate these two sources. They should determine if they are reliable and then find how to best use them in to answer a question. I am rather confident in being able to teach this standard to a student. College has made it very clear how important this is and it has helped me refine this skill personally.
One of the most interesting tools I found on CPALMS was called "Spice Up Your Writing -- Part One: Using Gerund Phrases as Subjects or Subject Complements". The most interesting thing about this is that it is a full length tutorial explaining gerund phrases, and there are videos like this for a variety of other topics. I don't want to teach my class through videos, but I know that during my educational career some teachers have not been able to explain things to me in a way I understand. This will give me the ability to show students these videos if they are not understanding something that I am teaching in class. I think that is very valuable for me and the students.

Being proficient with searching the internet is important as a teacher because you are constantly going to be learning. You are going to be learning better ways to teach, deliver lessons, and reach students. You need to able to verify that this new information and research is applicable to you and useful to you. I see myself using image search with the option to exclude copyrighted material. Copyright seems to be an area that can trip a lot of teachers up and I hope to avoid that.
Hey Eric,
ReplyDeleteAlthough we plan on teaching completely different grades I like how you were able to pinpont a spcific problem students often have in your grade level. I also like how you noted that being a teacher means also learning and growing but that the information we learn must be verifyable. I often forget about copyright without realizing it so I see myself having that problem as well but I also hope I can stay ahead of it.
