Blog Post #5

So far my time on Twitter has been rather good. I introduced myself during a twitter chat, not intending to get involved much beyond that, but the moderators quickly asked me questions and encouraged me to get involved in the discussion. It was awesome to be able to interact with educators and see how welcoming the community is. It has made me much more comfortable interacting with people on Twitter and I will be reaching out to educators for help more often. Twitter seems to be great for networking and in the future I can see myself using this site to meet other people in the field. This will help me learn more about teaching, job opportunities, and much more.

The digital divide refers to the divide between those who have access to computer/technology and those who do not. The digital divide effects student success in school by putting those without access at a disadvantage. The internet has information on it that can help students advance their understanding of subjects and not being able to access this information can be a major detriment. Some schools have their assignments online and the digital divide leaves some student completely unable to do these assignments if they are assigned as homework. A big cause of the digital divide is wealth inequality. Technology and internet are not cheap to purchase and maintain. As a teacher, I know I will see students who do not have internet access at home, and I plan to design my homework around that. I want to keep all of my assignments paper based so that I can give every student a fair shot at completing the assignment to the best of their ability.

Some educational software I hope to be able to use in the classroom are SkyWard and Kahoot. SkyWard is a great tool students can use to check their grades and even receive some feedback. This tool makes it very clear what a student scored and it gives them the ability to see why their grade is what it is. It also helps track their graduation progress. The other software is Kahoot. I love the competitive nature of Kahoot and I think this would be an awesome way to give low-stakes quizzes. Kahoot gets students involved and it gives me a chance to reward students who are showing how much they know. I think both of these tools are extremely beneficial for the students.

  1. It seems like you have gotten well antiquated with Twitter which I unfortunately cannot report the same results. I am working on connecting with groups that I find intriguing and am glad to see that you have done exactly that . I like your plan to evaluate each students needs and their access to the internet however that is going to be a tall order at the beginning of every year. Making sure to stay flexible as a teach is extremely important. I would also choose to use Kahoot in my classroom because it is one of the best technological tools to engage students. I like you also very much enjoy the competitive nature of Kahoot.
